About

Built by engineers, for engineers

We exist because the standard career advice doesn't work when your industry is being reshaped by AI overnight. “Update your LinkedIn” and “network more” aren't strategies when you're watching AI tools do work that used to take a team.

We built this tool because we've been through it. We've watched talented engineers get laid off, panic, and make decisions based on fear instead of data. We've seen people waste months retraining for the wrong thing, or freeze because they don't know where to start. And we've seen others pivot successfully into roles that AI hasn't touched yet.

The Survival Planner takes your actual situation—your role, skills, constraints, and priorities—and produces a concrete, actionable plan built for you. Not generic advice. Not a list of courses to take. A real roadmap with specific steps for your first 30 days.

Who we are

What's My Pivot was built by a team of engineers and career advisors who have collectively experienced multiple tech layoffs, career pivots, and industry transitions. We've worked at startups, game studios, and big tech companies. We've freelanced, founded companies, and rebuilt careers from scratch.

Our backgrounds span software engineering, game development, technical recruiting, and career coaching. We've helped hundreds of engineers navigate career transitions, and we've encoded what actually works into this tool.

We're based in the US but serve engineers globally. Our assessment engine is built on real labor market data, industry-specific patterns, and feedback from engineers who've successfully pivoted.

Our approach

We believe in data over intuition. Every recommendation in our tool is backed by actual market signals—job posting trends, salary data, skill demand curves, and success stories from engineers who've made similar transitions.

We also believe in honesty. Some pivots are harder than others. Some roles are more at risk from AI than people want to admit. We'll tell you the truth about your situation, even when it's uncomfortable.

And we believe in action. The worst thing you can do when facing career uncertainty is freeze. Our tool gives you something concrete to do tomorrow, not just a vague sense of direction.

How we make money

We're transparent about this: some of the tools and resources we recommend include affiliate links. If you click one and make a purchase, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

We only recommend products we'd genuinely suggest to a friend in your situation. Every recommendation is tied to a specific job-to-be-done in your plan and we explain exactly why each tool is there. We never recommend something just because it has a good commission.

The core assessment and planning tool is free and always will be. We make enough from affiliate recommendations to keep the lights on without charging you for the parts that matter most.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the assessment take?
The full assessment takes about 5 minutes. You'll answer questions about your current role, skills, experience level, and what you're looking for in your next position. At the end, you'll receive a personalized action plan.
Is the assessment really free?
Yes, the assessment and your personalized action plan are completely free. We make money through affiliate commissions when you choose to purchase tools or resources we recommend, but the core planning tool costs nothing.
What information do you collect?
We collect your email (optional, for saving your results) and your assessment responses. We don't sell your data to third parties. Your assessment data is used only to generate your personalized recommendations.
How accurate are the AI risk assessments?
Our AI risk assessments are based on current labor market data, job posting trends, and expert analysis of AI capabilities. They represent our best estimate of near-term impact (2-3 years) but technology changes rapidly. We recommend revisiting your assessment quarterly.
Can I retake the assessment?
Yes, you can retake the assessment as many times as you want. Your situation and the market both change over time, so we encourage periodic reassessment.
Do you offer personalized coaching?
Currently, we offer self-service tools only. However, if there's demand, we may introduce coaching services in the future. Sign up for our newsletter to stay informed.
